Here is the iconic building known as the Shelter Haven Hotel built in 1912 on the Shelter Haven Basin. I seem to vaguely recall that during this time period and even shortly thereafter having remembered that people actually stopped and parked their cars right in the middle of the very wide 96th Street in front of business establishments when it would become crowded.
I am not sure what time of the year this practice occurred. In fact, some even referred to 96th Street as “The Fifth Avenue of Stone Harbor”. These cars are much too close to actually be traveling or in motion as there is little if any assured and safe distance between the vehicles depicted in this photo. As I closely examined the several cars that are easily discernible in the foreground, it seems to me that these are actually vintage late 1930s automobiles.
In any event, I thought my readers would appreciate seeing this photo of Stone Harbor most likely taken shortly before the Second World War.
