Picture of the Day – Harlan’s History: Fawnhurst Stone Harbor

FAWNHURST STONE HARBOR, N.J.
Black-and-white postcard showing three photographic views of the Fawnhurst residence in Stone Harbor, NJ. The bottom center photo displays the full exterior of the large, unfinished two-story house with wraparound porch and dormers. The top left image shows a dining room interior with a table, chairs, and hanging lamp. The top right image shows a cozy living room with brick fireplace, shelves, and furnishings. Caption reads: Chas. Miller Jr.'s Residence "Fawnhurst" Stone Harbor, N.J.

Illustrated here is a 1916 post card showing an exterior view as well as two interior views of the Fawnhurst house.  This was the residence of Charles Miller Jr. and it was located at 155 93rd Street near First Avenue.  The interior views depict the dining room on the left and the living room with brick fireplace and living room on the right.

In addition, the other image that makes up this three-part post card shows the rather spacious and large house that has 10 rooms of which 5 are bedrooms and a bath, large dormitory, shower baths, laundry tubs, wrap-around porch on 3-sides, a concrete foundation and a separate garage.

This fully furnished house near the ocean was available in 1917 for $7,500.

Can you imagine what this would be worth today? Or better yet, would you have bought it back then?
