Picture Of The Day – Harlan’s History: A MEMORIAL TO THE FOUNDERS STONE HARBOR, N. J. 1964

Archival black-and-white image of a rough-hewn granite block bearing a bronze plaque that reads ‘RISLEY RECREATION AREA … Erected October 3, 1964,’ honoring Reese, David and Howard Risley; chain-link tennis-court fence visible behind.

As a part of the important 50th Anniversary celebration recognizing the founding of Stone Harbor, a bronze plaque on a large block of granite was prepared commemorating the occasion in a public ceremony.  The dedicatory program took place on the south side of 96th Street directly in front of the borough’s public tennis courts and this plaque was unveiled on October 3, 1964.

The bronze tablet carried the following inscription:

“RISLEY RECREATION AREA

Dedicated to the memory of

Reese P. Risley

David R. Risley

Howard S. Risley

who planned and developed

Stone Harbor

Erected October 3, 1964”

Clearly this was a fitting and very appropriate memorial to the men whose vision and accomplishments made possible the Stone Harbor we know and now enjoy.

Color photo taken June 2024 showing the same granite monument and bronze ‘Risley Recreation Area’ plaque in bright sunlight on a trimmed lawn, with fenced public tennis courts and shore homes in the background.

Just for the record, this updated second image of the aforementioned commemorative plaque was taken on a visit to Stone Harbor by this author in June of 2024.
