No. 130 – “A MYSTERY HOUSE!” – It all began when I discovered the vintage post card shown above. I maintain this particular card was prepared for promotional purposes. The only information on this interesting item appears in the lower margin and states the following: “This Apartment House for Rent or Sale; all conveniences. See Larsen Contracting Co., Stone Harbor, N. J.” Essentially that’s all I knew until I received some materials from my good friend Jim Talone who provided me with a bit of information that I felt was useful regarding the aforementioned building. It would seem that collaborating with others and sharing information may be one important way in which we can uncover some of the mysteries related to Stone Harbor post cards and photographs.
The next image associated with this brief account was contained in a booklet titled “Stone Harbor, N. J. – Summer Homes ForSale and Rent Season 1917” published by the South Jersey Realty Co. of Philadelphia, Pa.
For your information, the descriptive information that accompanied this photo indicated this building in 1917 was known as the REINHOLD APARTMENTS. Without question, this interesting architectural style is rather formidable and distinctive featuring rental units available on both floors. The caption went on to state: “95th Street near Sunset Drive, on lot 155, block 94, 2 1/2 stories. Lower, 7 rooms (3 bedrooms), bath, front and rear porches. Rent, unfurnished, $20 month. Upper same with large dormitory. Rent, season, furnished, $250. Near trains, boats, churches and stores. Sale, $5,000”. In addition to separate entrances both front and rear, there was a fireplace inside for each level. The front porches were ample with chairs for seating in the open air.
In conclusion, this account about the so-called “mystery house” reveals a very limited amount of information including the location and purpose for this fine house.
