Picture of the Day No. 170 – “STONE HARBOR FISHING CO.”

Fishing and shipbuilding were key industries throughout the early history of Cape May County.  However, very little is known about the two wooden structures shown in the image accompanying this post.  There is no question however that Stone Harbor was certainly in its infancy when this photo was snapped.

The 7 men portrayed in this moment in time were part of that once important fishing industry that provided meaningful livelihoods and income to those working on Seven Mile Island in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

This image bears witness to the origins of what became known as Stone Harbor and we thank the Stone Harbor Museum for the courtesy of allowing us to present this historic photograph that resides in their important archives collection.
