No. 144 – “THE HERBORT BEACH FRONT COTTAGE” – Located on First Avenue, near 88th Street, on the southwestern portion of lots 22, 24, 26, block 88, overlooking both the beach and the boardwalk, this fully furnished cottage (top left photo) has 8 rooms and bath (4 bedrooms), large porches and all modern conveniences. Rent, season, $450. In due course, additional space was added to the Herbort cottage when a 3rd story was constructed for more rental space.
The building next door, only partially visible in this image, was the Juergen’s cottage. It too would serve as a popular apartment house which was expanded when a 3rd floor was also added. One distinctive architectural element regarding the Juergen’s house was it had two turrets on the front, second floor. Such features were characteristic in Victorian architecture in the Queen Anne Revival style which rose to popularity in the United States from the late 1880s to the the early 1900s. Several other large cottages built in Stone Harbor during this time period including the home of Reese Risley’s “Hydrangea” also had a similar circular turret that protruded from the house, typically on the corners with steep roofs. Such added turrets or embellishments were a very nice touch indeed as I am sure you will agree.
