No. 114 – “ANOTHER DRAMATIC SCENE TAKEN DURING THE CELEBRATED JULY 1911 GALA WEEK FESTIVITIES AT STONE HARBOR, N. J.” – This striking photo image resides in the Stone Harbor Museum archives and portrays some most interesting features associated with the nautical themed events conducted during the July 1 – 5, 1911 Gala Week Festivities.  Notably, there appears to be 3 central subjects that constitute this maritime image and lend themselves to some brief description.

First and foremost, there is in the foreground a motorized boat decked out with numerous 48-Star American Flags transporting what appears to be dignitaries attired for a ceremonial or special occasion.  In this instance, it is our opinion that this photo relates to the maritime activities connected to the Gala Week Festivities held in early July of 1911.  Clearly it seems that some scheduled event is about to take place at Stone Harbor and all appears to be in readiness.

The second feature shows a U.S. Life Saving Service row boat being tended to by as many as 7 life saving men who are properly attired, on duty and ready to be available should the need arise.

Thirdly, in the near distant background is the impressive Stone Harbor Yacht Club based steam/sailing yacht known as the “Winning”.  Obviously it is an important occasion as the “Winning” is as we can see ceremonially flying numerous nautical flags or pennants commonly used for signals and/or means of identification.

Hopefully you are enjoying this and some other recently posted nautical images that speak to what was going on in Stone Harbor some 113 years ago!
