Picture of the Day No. 110 – “A YOUNG GIRL STOPS FOR A MOMENT FOR HER PICTURE TO BE TAKEN”

No. 110

“A YOUNG GIRL STOPS FOR A MOMENT FOR HER PICTURE TO BE TAKEN” – Seldom have we seen what is featured as the backdrop in this photo: the Abla Apartments in Stone Harbor, N. J.  We have very sketchy information about this building.  Previously I have written a brief article about the Abla Apartments for the Stone Harbor Museum.  In that account I presented several known post cards depicting picturesque views of the boardwalk including the Abla Apartment house and even the Municipal Pier Theatre located at 106th Street.  Apparently both structures were built at or shortly after the boardwalk was completed and dedicated in 1916.  In addition, it is our understanding that both buildings were destroyed along with the entire boardwalk as the result of the Great Atlantic Hurricane of October 1944.

Discovered in the Stone Harbor Museum archives, the image presented here shows us an unnamed young girl standing on the boardwalk in front of the Abla Apartments wearing a long-sleeved Navy sailor dress (such nautical apparel was very popular for girls at the time) with collar and scarf and sporting sunglasses.  Does anyone recognize her or know who she is?  No information accompanied this interesting photograph.
