No. 100 – “THE VIEW ALONG SUNSET DRIVE” – This 1911 photograph looking northward was taken along Sunset Drive skirting the Great Channel. It is my contention that this image was taken at the Snug Harbor Basin area with the Stone Harbor Yacht Club directly behind the photographer snapping this photo. I am especially fond of the shuttle vehicle shown in the front right portion of this photo because it sports signage announcing “STONE HARBOR AUTO”. What a clever idea – perhaps a precursor or early ancestor to today’s Uber or Lyft rides!
You might rightly ask a reasonable question at this point: “What is so intriguing, if anything, about this photographic image?” In order to answer that important question I’ll have you know that there were two captions that accompanied this photo stating the following: “The First Automobiles to reach Stone Harbor under their own power” and “A view along Sunset Drive after the Opening of the Bridge”.
So it would therefore appear that according to the above information, the newly constructed causeway and drawbridge connecting the mainland with Seven Mile Island and Stone Harbor had just been dedicated and officially opened for traffic on July 3, 1911. That is why for these reasons I personally have selected this particular photograph to be posted at this time on the Stone Harbor Museum Meta/Facebook platform as well as the Stone Harbor Museum webpage. This photo captured a very important moment in the early history of Stone Harbor.
