Harlan’s History Of The Week: Wilkin’s Cottage and California Bungalow

Welcome back to Harlan’s History! Now that the summer season has wrapped up, we’re picking back up with our weekly posts exploring Stone Harbor’s past. Each entry draws from the museum’s collection of early real estate listings, postcards, photographs, and archival materials. Whether you’ve been following along or are joining us for the first time, we’re glad to have you here.

“Wilkins Cottage”

This rather stately two-story cottage near the water/Great Channel is located on 84th Street between Third Avenue and Sunset Drive in block 83 and consists of 6 rooms (3 bedrooms), bath, front and rear porches. This is listed as a “popular type” cottage available for sale, $2,000.

“California Bungalow”

This charming California Bungalow, with wood shingle siding and with deep overhangs, was becoming increasingly popular in Stone Harbor around 1916-17. The bungalow is located on Corinthian Place, overlooking the water/Pleasure Bay on lot 71, block 202. Consisting of 6 rooms (of which 2 were bedrooms), a bath and large front porch, the realty listing stated this property is in a “very desirable location.” Rent, furnished for the season, $250.
